Ferdinand Fox’s Big Sleep Kidsbook App for iPad

We hope you and your children will enjoy using Ferdinand Fox’s Big Sleep kidsbook app!

However, if you experience any technical problems we’d like to fix them as quickly as possible, so please use the comments section below to let us know. In the meantime here are a couple of issues that have come up which relate to your iPad settings.

If you can’t get sound

If you are not getting sound, check that your iPad’s mute button isn’t on – you’ll find it somewhere on the outer edge. (Even if you get YouTube and movie files with sound still check your mute button as it doesn’t always affect those files, so may still be on mute.)

Check camera settings if you have crash issues at start

If you have issues with the app crashing when you try to go to the first page, check that you have the camera enabled in your iPad’s settings. It seems that iOS8 may disable this in some instances. You need it enabled because you have the facility to take a picture to add into the ‘This book belongs to…’ page at the start (for your personal consumption, of course) and the app won’t open without this.

On your iPad go to Settings > Privacy > Camera > and then chooses Allow/Enable

    No sound when I choose read to me.

      Hello, Karen – this is probably because your mute button is on. (It happened to me when I first tested the app… and to one other person.) Check top right or left (or bottom right or left) on the edge of the iPad. You need to slide the button to the right or left (I can’t remember which!) Oddly the mute button doesn’t affect sound on YouTube and Tv type channels but does affect the app file.

      Please let me know if this works.

    The app closes immediately after pressing the arrow in the lower right corner. I have tried restarting my IPad, no help. I tried deleting the app and downloading again, it still closes. What else can I do?

      BTW, Camille – which App are you referring to – is it the Word Match game or the interactive rhyming story? I’ll wait to hear before asking my developer – also if you could let me know which model of iPad you have and which iOS you are running that would be great. I know that the rhyming story app only runs on iOS or above, but I’m sure you will have that…

    I’m having the same problem as Camille. The app shuts down immediately on pressing the continue arrow in the lower right corner of the second page. IOS 8.4.1, which is uptodate. It’s the interactive story app. Any suggestions?

      Thanks for this feedback, Joan and I’m so sorry to hear you’re having a problem. May I ask whether you had the app working previously okay and this problem has only occurred with IOS 8.4.1 update? Or have you only just bought the app and this is happening for the first time? Once I hear back from you I will contact my developer. It’s late here in the UK so going to bed now — but if you can leave a message for me here I’ll get onto it in the morning.       Ignore that last post, Joan — it’s just gone midnight and I’m getting my days mixed up! I’ll wait and hear back from you tomorrow. Could you also confirm which model of iPad you have (1, 2, 3 etc)? Problems are extremely rare and I just hope the new iOS update hasn’t caused issues.. Many thanks, Karen

    I just purchased the book and the problem was there from the very start. The IOS update was prior to the app purchase. I am using an iPad Air. Thanks.

      Hi Joan — I’ve spoken to my developer who has tested it on the latest iOS updates and found it all working so this is puzzling. He has suggested that you reset your iPad and has provided this link… It’s not as drastic as it sounds when you read the instructions. I’ve just emailed him to ask whether an iPad Air would be likely to have issues that other iPads don’t but I’m guessing he’ll tell me not. Rest assured that if we can’t solve this I will refund you but hopefully we can sort it out. I’m so sorry once again – it’s most frustrating.

      Hi again, Joan – my developer has confirmed that the iPad Air should work in the same way as any other iPad and said he had tested it on his iPad Air 2.

      He also reassured me that resetting is simply like a restart, nothing gets lost or changed. It simply clears out the memory.

      If you try this and still have problems can you let me know what ‘number’ iPad Air you have, just in case it’s relevant (though I’m guessing that’s unlikely.) I’ll keep fingers crossed…

        It’s an original iPad Air (1). I’ve performed the restart several times. I’ve also deleted the original app and reloaded it. Sadly the same thing occurs. The app shuts down after pressing the continue arrow. Some sort of “registration” page briefly flashes prior to shutting down. Any other suggestions?

        Hi Joan – I’ve just sent you comment to the developer. I’m baffled. For info my internet keeps dropping in and out (very unusual — there’s an issue in our whole area) — so if I go quiet for a while don’t worry it just means I can’t get online. I will get back to you as soon as I hear from the developer. Apologies again. Karen

      Hi Joan – my developer has just tried something and thinks it may be to do with iOS8 resetting the camera settings to disallow photos. If it has done this it may cause it to crash. (You have the facility to take a picture to add into the ‘This book belongs to…’ page — just for your use, of course — and it’s good fun….)

      He has said to try this:
      On your iPad go to Settings > Privacy > Camera > and then chooses ‘Allow’

      He just tried disabling it in iOS8 and it caused the app to crash so he wonders if that could be it? Will you let me know? If it’s that then I will update this page for anyone else’s benefit. Fingers crossed…

    I’ve been away so am getting back to you now. I did leave a rating on the app. It’s a great story and app. And, yes, I am in the USA. I got your link from my brother who wants to indie publish from Tokyo. Nice website as well.
